Autogenic Training: Introduction
Living in the US, you probably have not heard about Autogenic Training – or in short Autogenics. In Europe, especially in Germany and Great Britain, but also in Japan, it has been taught in medical schools, and it is an integrative part of rehabilitation treatment and well respected by the medical community.
Moreover, in Europe, Autogenic Training is available for almost everybody, with or without medical or psychological conditions. Classes are offered at many community colleges and other facilities of adult education, even in smaller communities.
Now Autogenic Training has begun to receive in the US the attention it deserves as a highly preventative measure for many stress-related diseases.
Autogenic Training is the oldest Western approach for facilitating recovery from psycho-physiological symptoms. It is a medically proven mental relaxation technique designed to let you experience instant relief from stress symptomswith profound deep relaxation.
There are thousands of scientific publications on the efficiency of Autogenic Training (mostly in German, Japanese, or Russian) for various physiological and psychological conditions making Autogenic Training one of the best-documented and researched stress relief and relaxation methods.
It is so effective that it has been used by NASA, the American space agency.
The core of Autogenic Training is a series ofsix mental phraseseach focusing on a particular effect, related to a state of deep relaxation such as heaviness and warmth in the limbs and deep breathing.
These physiological changes engendered by Autogenic Training are those that naturally occur when your body is completely relaxed. (Do you remember the last time you sat in complete relaxation in your bathtub or at a beach?)
As you relax in a sitting or lying position, you silently repeat each of these phrases in your mind, thus relaxing mind and body. Autogenic Training therefore can be considered a form of self-hypnosis that is aimed towards stress relief and deep relaxation.
The shift to physical and mental relaxation is generated (Greek genos) from within yourself (Greek autos) – hence “Autogenic.” “Training” indicates that mastering Autogenics requires some discipline and a few minutes each day dedicated for your practice.
The elegance of Autogenic Training lies in the fact that you do not need any equipment or special clothing, nor do you need to muster up any effort. To the contrary, you practice Autogenic Training in a state of passive concentrationin which you intentionally relinquish any effort and willpower.
Once learned, you even don’t need to sit or lie down. You will be able to bring about the shift to a state of deep relaxation and serenity within seconds. And it doesn’t matter where you are: in the waiting room, in a stressful meeting with co-workers and supervisor, while catching up with household chores, or while stuck in a traffic jam. (However, don't practice Autogenic Training while driving!) Autogenic Training will become a permanent skill for coping with stress and for developing serenity.
Autogenic Training is an extremely practical relaxation and stress relief technique. It does not presuppose any religious or spiritual belief. It can be, however, the gateway for further exploration of the spiritual realm.
With Autogenic Training, you train the mind to relax the body. When the mind quiets down, the body follows. This mechanism is so powerful that you even don't need to believe it in order to make it work!
